War Academy, who was pulled up after taking awkward steps in last year’s Arkansas Derby, is set to make his first start since that race in an allowance Thursday at Santa Anita.
The Bob Baffert trainee is part of a six-horse field going six furlongs and Martin Garcia is named to ride.
War Academy launched his bid on last year’s Triple Crown Trail after winning his debut, finishing fourth in the San Vicente and winning an allowance on March 15. He went into the Arkansas Derby as the 9-5 favorite, but he did not finish the race. Jockey Mike Smith pulled up the son of Giant’s Causeway before the finish, citing that the horse “felt awkward” and he wanted to be safe.
War Academy has posted a steady tab of works at Hollywood Park, Los Alamitos and San Anita in preparation for his 4-year-old debut.
