The status of jockey Garrett Gomez, who suddenly took off all mounts on opening day at Del Mar, remains unknown as of Friday night.
An update from the Del Mar press office stated that Gomez had not called the stewards as instructed and would “remain off his mounts until they do.”
Gomez took time off from riding in June, citing marital issues. He returned to ride at Betfair Hollywood Park and was slated to ride five Wednesday at Del Mar when his agent, Tony Matos, informed Del Mar officials he would not be riding.
Replacements on Del Mar’s Saturday card for Gomez: Edwin Maldonado on Londinium in the second race, Martin Garcia on Pure Blush in the third, Alonso Quinonez on Sizzlin Joe in the fourth and Garry Stevens on Appealing in the fifth race, the Osunitas Stakes. A replacement on Lucayan in the Eddie Read Stakes has yet to be named.
