Gomez picking up Derby mounts

Jockey Garrett Gomez continues to pick up Derby contender mounts. He is headed to Turfway Park on March 23 to ride Frac Daddy in the Spiral for Kenny McPeek.

Gomez is also slated to ride Delhomme in the Rebel Stakes on March 16 for Todd Pletcher. Delhomme was third in the Remsen in his last start. derby 2

Balance the Books back in training

Balance the Books, who bypassed Sunday’s Palm Beach Stakes because of missed training due to a recent fever, was back on the track for a work Sunday.

The son of Lemon Drop Kid went four furlongs in :48.18 on the dirt surface at Palm Meadows. It was a bullet of 52 works at that distance.

Trainer Chad Brown said the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park could be his next start.

Treasury Bill continues preparing for Rebel

San Vicente runner-up Treasury Bill continues to prepare for a possible start in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn on March 16.

The son of Lemon Drop Kid, trained by Ron Ellis, worked six furlongs in 1:14.80 at Hollywood Park.

He closed at 28-1 in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

Super Ninety Nine posts bullet work

Super Ninety Nine, who could start in the Rebel Stakes, posted a bullet work Monday at Santa Anita.

The Southwest Stakes champ covered four furlongs in :46.40, the best time of 44 works at that distance.

Another Bob Baffert worker was War Academy, fourth in the San Vicente. The son of Giant’s Causeway went four furlongs in :46.80.

Tampa Bay Derby field taking shape

Saturday’s Tampa Bay Derby field is starting to take shape.

Todd Pletcher’s undefeated allowance winner Verrazano headlines the list of contenders. Others expected to line up are Sam F. Davis winner Falling Sky and runner-up Dynamic Sky, Nick Zito’s Eton Blue, Hutcheson winner Delhomme, Kenny McPeek’s Java’s War, Gulfstream-based Offlee Fast and Inaugural Stakes winner Purple Egg.

The Grade 2 race at 1 /16-miles offers 50 points to the winner.

OAKS

Flashy Gray, who topped the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager at 6-1, will have jockey Mike Smith aboard for Saturday’s Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes, according to Oaklawn Racing.

Flashy Gray, a daughter of Flashy Bull trained by Bill Mott, is coming off an impressive allowance win at Gulfstream off a three-month layoff.
