Countess Curlin an under-the-radar Oaks contender

Daughter of Curlin has shined in three straight wins

Countess Curlin, the Steve Asmussen-trained daughter of Curlin, isn’t garnering the headlines of many of her fellow Stonestreet filles.

She should be.

The chestnut filly has won three straight, capped by Sunday’s impressive, four-length win in the $50,000 Island Fashion Stakes at Sunland Park. oaks 2

Guided patiently by jockey Luis Contreras, she came from far off the pace and drew off late in the stretch, covering the mile in 1;39.68. A strong wind – so much so it shook the Sunland camera and rendered the replay nearly unwatchable – makes the effort even more notable.

Prior to this win, Countess Curlin registered similar easy victories at Sam Houston and Retama.

She is likely to make her next start in the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks on March 24, a Kentucky Oaks points race that offers 50 points to the winner.
