Trainer Bob Baffert summed it up after his 3-year-old filly Fiftyshadesofhay worked at Santa Anita Sunday morning.
“She’s Kentucky Oaks material,” he said.
The daughter of Pulpit, who won the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel impressively in her last start, worked in company with Brannaman and went five furlongs in :59.40. Brannaman covered the same distance in 1:00 flat.
The cleverly named Fiftyshadesofhay is owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, the connections who unveiled promising debut-winning filly Midnight Lucky on Feb. 16.
Fiftyshadesofhay is 2 of 6, with her losses including a try on turf in which she finished eighth. She was beaten by 12 lengths by Blonde Fog on Oct. 28, another Baffert-trained filly part-owned by Pegram.
Baffert said Fiftyshadesofhay is on track for Saturday’s Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita, a Kentucky Oaks points race worth 50 points to the winner.
She’s likely to meet up with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies champ Beholder, who has reportedly recovered from a throat ulcer that was discovered after her runner-up performance to Renee’s Titan in the Santa Ynez Stakes. Renee’s Titan is also likely for Saturday’s race.
