Pletcher Derby, Oaks works moved up to Saturday

April 26th, 2013

Due to the expected inclement weather this weekend, trainer Todd Pletcher moved works of five Derby contenders to Saturday. They were originally scheduled for Sunday.

Pletcher said Oaks contenders Unlimited Budget, Dreaming of Julia, Princess of Sylmar and Silsita will likely work early, possibly at 6 a.m., while the colts will work during the special training session for Derby and Oaks contenders at 8:30 a.m.

“Right now, the plan is to work Palace Malice and Overanalyze together and Revolutionary and Charming Kitten will go together,” Pletcher said. “Verrazano will go with (La Troienne contender) Authenticity again. That’s all subject to change, but that’s the tentative plan.”

Jockey John Velazquez is awaiting clearance to ride and will not be aboard Verrazano for Sunday’s work.

Pletcher said Winning Cause, a possible sixth Derby starter, would not work until Sunday or Monday.

Golden Soul makes impressive impression Friday

April 26th, 2013

Golden Soul, who sits at No. 23 on the Derby points leaderboard, made a strong showing when he worked over the Churchill Downs track Friday.

The son of Perfect Soul, fourth in the Louisiana Derby, went five furlongs in 1:00.80. According to Churchill Downs, the splits were :12.20 for the first eighth of a mile, :24.40 for the quarter, :36 for three-eighths and :48.40 for the half. Golden Soul galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.40.

“Just basically maintenance,’’ trainer Dallas Stewart said. “He had a hard work (1:12.40 for six furlongs) last week. We didn’t want to open him up this week. Get a breeze in him, comfortable, hopefully come back good, and we saw most of that so far today.
“He did if very easy. I really liked the way he galloped out. He finished the last eighth of a mile with his ears up in the work, then looked like when he got into the turn, he finished it off nicely.’’
The time was solid, but that wasn’t the appeal of the work. Golden Soul maneuvered with a strong, fluid stride, and appeared to wield an affinity for the track not shown by many of the other Derby contenders.
Keep an eye on Golden Soul if he draws into the field.
